Mitre pub in Kirk Michael sets 21 October reopening under new management

The village inn, which Isle of Man Today says is widely seen as the island's oldest, has been closed since January.

The Mitre in Kirk Michael will open its doors again on Wednesday, 21 October, with a new team in charge, ending a closure that began in January.

The pub announced the date on Friday and said it was eager to bring the place “back to life”, Isle of Man Today reported. It promised customers a range of drinks, special deals and a friendly welcome.

The pub’s shutdown at the start of the year had raised fears that it might not return. The brewery said then that the closure would make way for refurbishment, and signalled that it had future plans for the inn.

Isle of Man Today said many regard the Mitre as the island’s oldest surviving inn, and that the earliest known record of it dates from 1797. The traveller George Feltham called it “a most respectable inn” when he toured the island.

The building was once part of the Ballachrink estate, which the paper said is understood to extend to about 120 acres.

The new management has urged people to pass on the news before the reopening, saying it is keen to see regulars and newcomers alike. According to Isle of Man Today, further details about the new operators, and about any changes to what the pub offers, have yet to be announced.
