Lidl GB has said it has “noted recent interest” in the Isle of Man, but the supermarket chain has not announced any plan to open a store on the island.
The British arm of the German supermarket group made the comment in a statement from a spokesperson to Manx Radio, which published it on Thursday, 8 October.
The spokesperson said Lidl GB was “always open to exploring new opportunities” for selling its products to more consumers, and that this extended to the island, “where we have noted recent interest”.
“We will continue to review any potential sites that meet our requirements,” the spokesperson added.
The statement did not say whose interest Lidl had noted, whether the company had looked at or been offered any site on the island, or what its requirements for a site are.
It set no timetable, referred to no planning application and stopped short of any promise to open a shop here.
Manx Radio said in its report that there was no indication Lidl intended to open on the island in the near future.
The remarks come as Lidl GB plans to expand its store network. According to Manx Radio, the company runs more than 1,000 stores and intends to open a further 50 during 2027.
Manx Radio also reported that Lidl GB had recently overtaken Morrisons to become the UK’s fifth-largest grocer.
