Douglas Council rules out consultation on weekly bin collections

The council's executive committee said bringing back weekly rounds would cost too much, but councillors will look at the idea again in six months.

Douglas Council will not ask people in the town for their views on whether weekly bin collections should be brought back, 3FM reported on Saturday morning.

Bins in Douglas are currently emptied every fortnight, having previously been collected once a week. Councillor Karel Ver Elst had proposed that the council consider switching back to a weekly service.

The council’s executive committee, however, said it would not make the change. Its reason, according to the station, was cost: a weekly service would be too expensive.

No estimate of the cost of weekly rounds was given.

The question has not been shelved for good. Councillors voted to come back to it in six months’ time, which means weekly collections are due to return to the council’s agenda.
